In late 2007, Mobb Deep and G-Unit hip hop artist Prodigy was sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars after pleading guilty to a weapons charge dating back to 2006. The charge relates to his arrest last October, when New York cops pulled over his Chevy Suburban for making an illegal turn. A search of the car turned up an unlicensed .22-caliber pistol. Midway through trial proceedings, Prodigy confessed to ownership of the gun and struck a deal with prosecutors. The agreement limited his jail term to just three-and-a-half years instead of the usual 15—the sentence normally given to felons who are facing their third weapons charge.
It Doesn’t Get Any More Real Than This
Rather than bide his time waiting to serve his sentence, Prodigy made the most of the situation, using Kyte and a Nokia N95 phone to document his last few weeks before serving his sentence. From Jackass-inspired comedy with Steve-O to intimate scenes with his wife, the footage he produced resulted in some of the most compelling to date, causing a sensation in the hip hop community and generating significant buzz in the music and lifestyle media.
With Kyte, Prodigy was able to share some of the most pivotal moments from his life – delivered in real-time to websites, blogs, social networks and mobile phones – granting fans unprecedented access to his life, as it happened.
